COACHING DETAIL

TOEFL Coaching

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an English language proficiency test widely used for academic purposes, such as university admissions. Developed and administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service), the TOEFL assesses individuals’ abilities to understand and use English in an academic context.

TOEFL Exam Stages

  • Listening

In this section, test-takers listen to a variety of spoken materials, including academic lectures, conversations, and discussions. Questions following the audio assess listening skills such as identifying main ideas, details, inferences, speaker attitudes, and organization. The listening section usually takes around 60 to 90 minutes.

  • Reading

The reading section presents test-takers with 3 to 4 academic passages, each followed by a set of questions. Test-takers are required to answer questions that assess their comprehension of the passage's main ideas, details, logical organization, vocabulary usage, and more. The reading section typically lasts about 60 to 80 minutes.

  • Speaking

The speaking section evaluates test-takers' ability to express themselves orally in English. Test-takers respond to a series of prompts, including personal experiences, summaries of reading and listening materials, and discussions of academic topics. This section involves 4 to 6 tasks and takes around 20 minutes.

  • Writing

The writing section assesses test-takers' written communication skills. It includes two tasks: an integrated task where test-takers read a passage and listen to a related lecture, then write a summary; and an independent task where test-takers write an essay expressing their opinion on a given topic. The writing section usually takes about 50 minutes.

TOEFL SCORING

Here’s an overview of the scoring system for each section of the TOEFL exam:

  • Reading Section (Score Range: 0-30 points)

The Reading section typically consists of 3-4 reading passages, with 12-14 questions per passage. Each question is worth 1 point, so the maximum possible score for this section is 30 points. The raw score (number of correct answers) is converted to a scaled score between 0 and 30.

  • Listening Section (Score Range: 0-30 points)

The Listening section includes 4-6 lectures and 2-3 conversations, followed by questions about each audio clip. Similar to the Reading section, each question is worth 1 point, and the maximum possible score is 30 points. Raw scores are converted to scaled scores between 0 and 30.

  • Speaking Section (Score Range: 0-30 points)

The Speaking section evaluates the test-taker's ability to express their thoughts clearly and coherently. There are a total of 6 tasks in this section, including speaking about familiar topics, summarizing a lecture, and expressing an opinion on a topic. Human raters evaluate the spoken responses based on factors like delivery, language use, and topic development. Each of the 6 tasks is scored on a scale of 0-4, and the individual task scores are then summed and converted to a scaled score between 0 and 30.

  • Writing Section (Score Range: 0-30 points)

The Writing section assesses the ability to write coherent and organized responses. Test-takers are required to write an essay expressing an opinion and to summarize information from a reading and a lecture. Like the Speaking section, human raters evaluate the written responses based on various criteria. Each of the 2 tasks is scored on a scale of 0-5, and the individual task scores are then multiplied by 2 to provide a scaled score between 0 and 30.
